Plastic Surgery in Colombia: Could You Save More in Medellín?
What if the procedure you have been considering could cost less than you expected? For Americans facing high plastic surgery quotes at home, Medellín, Colombia offers a reason to take a closer look: the possibility of meaningful savings.
The question is not simply whether a Colombian procedure has a lower advertised price. It is how much you could save after comparing the same treatment, the services included and the full cost of traveling and recovering abroad.
For Americans exploring breast surgery, facial rejuvenation or body contouring, that is where the conversation should begin: your goals, an individualized physician quote and a clear total budget.

What could 50–70% savings mean for you?
Published medical-tourism providers advertise potential savings in this range for select procedures in Colombia compared with U.S. prices. Medical Tourism Corporation, for example, publishes a 50–70% estimate. This is a provider estimate, not a nationwide guarantee or a verified Andes savings rate.
The opportunity is worth exploring, particularly when a high U.S. quote has made your plans feel out of reach. Your own savings depend on the procedure, the physician’s individualized quote and the costs included on both sides of the comparison. Add travel and recovery arrangements before deciding what the difference means for your budget.
Could your budget go further in Medellín?
Plastic surgery in Colombia can be less expensive than in the United States, but there is no single discount that applies to every patient or procedure. Your estimate depends on the physician, surgical plan, facility, anesthesia and the care or services included.
A lower medical quote can create room in your budget for accommodations, local transportation and support during your stay. Those additional expenses also affect the final savings. The useful comparison is the complete investment for each option, rather than one attractive starting price.
That means requesting written estimates for comparable procedures. A U.S. quote that lists only the surgeon’s fee should not be compared with a Colombian quote that includes anesthesia and facility charges, or vice versa. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons notes, for example, that its published average breast augmentation fee excludes anesthesia, operating-room facilities and related expenses.
Start with the number that matters: your potential savings
Begin with your complete U.S. estimate. Then add up the medical and travel costs for Medellín. The difference is your potential savings, based on those particular estimates.
- Medical costs: physician fees, anesthesia, facility charges, tests, medications and the follow-up appointments specified in the quote.
- Travel and accommodation: flights, baggage, lodging for the physician-confirmed stay and any companion’s expenses.
- Local arrangements: airport transfers, appointment transport, meals and any separately quoted coordination services.
- Recovery support: any nursing or other support recommended by the treating physician, with the provider, hours and price confirmed in writing.
- Financial flexibility: payment fees, currency conversion and a reserve for an extended stay or additional care.
If both totals are in U.S. dollars, subtract the complete Medellín budget from the comparable U.S. total. To express the difference as a percentage, divide that amount by the U.S. total and multiply by 100. This gives you a personalized comparison rather than a promotional percentage that may not apply to you.
Exchange rates can also affect charges quoted in Colombian pesos. A fee fixed in U.S. dollars does not automatically fall when the exchange rate changes. Confirm the currency, payment dates and conversion fees before relying on an estimate.

Why Medellín is part of the conversation
Affordability is one reason to explore Medellín. Its established international healthcare activity gives patients another reason to look more closely.
Medellín’s city government reported 23,323 international patients in 2024 across medical services. That is not a count of plastic surgery patients alone. Nationally, the ISAPS 2025 survey reported a median foreign-patient proportion of 27.5% among responding Colombian plastic surgeons. It is a survey measure, rather than a census of every procedure.
These figures point to an established international patient market. For your own decision, however, the relevant details are the particular physician, treatment facility and arrangements proposed for you.
Affordability should come with a plan
A meaningful savings conversation includes who will perform the procedure and where it will take place. Ask about the physician’s training, experience with your proposed procedure, credentials, facility arrangements and follow-up plan.
The Sociedad Colombiana de Cirugía Plástica’s surgeon directory can be one starting point for checking professional membership. Also confirm the physician’s credentials and the facility’s authorization directly. Social media, before-and-after photographs and patient communities can help you discover options, but they do not replace those checks or an individual medical consultation.
Recovery accommodations and local support can make a stay easier to organize. Nursing coverage, meals, transfers and physician visits vary by provider and package. Confirm exactly what is included. Any post-operative treatment should follow the treating physician’s advice, and your stay and clearance to travel should be determined individually.

Frequently asked questions
Is plastic surgery in Colombia less expensive than in the United States?
It can be, but the difference depends on the procedure, physician, currency, facility and services included. Compare complete, individualized estimates rather than an advertised starting price.
Does a favorable exchange rate lower every charge?
No. It may lower the dollar cost of charges priced in Colombian pesos. A fee fixed in U.S. dollars does not automatically change, and banks or payment providers may add conversion costs.
Does Andes make medical recommendations?
No. Andes provides non-medical coordination and facilitates introductions. The independent physician determines candidacy, recommends treatment, explains medical risks and benefits, sets medical fees and remains responsible for medical care and outcomes.
